Maybe this is the OP's way of trying to get free directory listings from everyone...Hmmm???

If people believe him and stop charging review fees for advertising space, then this ridiculous scheme may work.:mad:

lol let me think clearly ...

so you are saying every business should stop promoting their site ???

how would google know if a link is a paid link or not...

paid directory sure ... if i charge for a review not a link ?? google is going to read my mind ??

ever read a book called 1984 ?? by George Orwell

the case happened in there. .. any success i dont think so.

it is almost impossible to follow through that unless ofcourse google bans itself for selling sponsored links for big keywords ...

    My thoughts exactly smub...

Adsense=paid text links on a website...justified as advertising space.

Why would directories, which at least charge a review fee, be looked down upon. Almost any site can participate in Adwords...if you pay for the links.

As mentioned earlier...not everyone gets listed in directories...even if they pay review fee.

All of these directory owners charge a one off review fee or what? Havent seen anyone charging for annual review yet but its coming and it will be a damned good thing to.

Some of those sites are annual fees, and if someones site becomes complete crap, I doubt the site will be there next year, regardless of payment.
That is one reason why they are the TOP directories...Quality.

umm i believe most of them are yearly and some are one time review...

or some have featured yearly and regular one time...

besides ... some directories have much more to offer other than just a backlink....

You are talking about traffic of course. ;) None of us would be caught dead selling PR, would we?
Glad to see you made the distinction. There is a very good reason for doing so, even if some dont see it. But I think we will seeing more and more directory owners stressing the need for an annual review to ensure that the content in their directories is current.

Google might not be all good but it does give us a shove in the right direction from time to time. :D

You call it 'buying', while I call it 'advertising'
You say its buying PR to the top, I say I am promoting to get traffic.

Care about PR, like you do, and you will feel guilty for it. Care about traffic, like I do, and you will be content.

Not sure if I follow this. Are you saying that you will buy "advertising" to get a high PR so that you will get traffic to the sites you list in your directory?

Theres no way to say you are buying a link for it's PR. Respectable sites in which a lot of directory owners buy links from just happen to have PR, and DO send traffic.

I believe Google is cracking down on the PR6/7 sites which offer unrelated text link ads to gambling, porn etc etc. The one's that shouldn't even be there. So it's a different story.

Agreed but Google have asked sites selling advertising and traffic to use the no follow tag or have I missed something? The point that cannot be argued is that Google is cracking down and there are very good reasons for it, whatever they may be.

Are we doing enough as directory owners to ensure it goes no further?

Indeed, you seem to have formed a very warped interpretation of what Matt Cutts has actually said to what it actually means.

I suggest you take a further look at http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-report-paid-links/ as your views seem very misguided - either that or you stuggling to concisely explain what you actually mean.

Yes and I will do to the best capacity I can. ;)

    Well said.

With the exception of certain very selective narrow niche directories, which immediately eliminates 99% of the directories being promoted at DigitalPoint, or certain "super directories" like Yahoo, no one is using these things to find sites and no one is buying listings for traffic. Call it whatever you wish but those fees are for PR and you all know that full well. And, by the way, so does Google.

Google has been gradually devaluing all these crap directories for some time. You can keep selling your links. Your customers can keep buying links. Knock yourselves out. But let's be clear that bit by bit the value of any PR being passed along is rapidly approaching zero.

This is especially true for (a) bidding directories and (b) annual fee directories, in my opinion. If you're a buyer, don't waste your money.

Your joking right? Google is not going to waste time devaluing directories because they think these guys are selling links for pr. Directories may provide some pr benifit to the sites listed but that benifit is very low in terms of pr juice. At best you might get a pr 6 link which is likely to have about 20 or more other links on the same page, so again the pr benifit is low. How much pr benifit can you really get from a pr 3 or 4 category page which you will find on most directories.

If someone wanted to use directories only in order to boost their pr to something like a 6 or 7 then they are going need to be listed in every single directory on the internet and then some. How many directories do you know of that can provide the same kind of pr juice that dmoz does? There are'nt any, so why should google care about directories charging for a review fee? After all, dmoz does it all the time, but I guess that page is hidden somewhere on the directory.
