If Spamming doesn't work then how come.....

Everyone says that you shouldn't spam, but I did a quick check of many sites that were spamming sites and they were all PR 4 and 5 and many ranked really well in the search engines. I even found a couple that were PR 6 and 7 and did the most awful looking spam you could imagine.

So why do SEO experts say spamming doesn't work when obviously it appears to for them?

Could it be the grand conspiracy by "SEO Experts" to say that because they are spammers themselves and don't want you to catch on that they are doing it too?

Spamming is bad and in some places against the law. If you can do it without getting caught more power to you, but its like a walking billboard. I think there is way too much negative to it than positive.

I think that "old" spammers have "old" links. It counts

Well spamming by email is against the law. But im actually talking about people who spam on "abandoned" blogs and forums in particular, where either the person doesn't moderate comments or just abandoned the site completely letting spammers have free roam.

If you're talking about link spamming, I'm not sure how many people who say it doesn't work. It works great sometimes, as you've seen. A better answer to why not to link spam is it will get your domain banned. If you're building a legitimate destination/authority website and building a brand, link spamming is bad.

If you're a black hatter that owns hundreds of sites that you link spam the crap out of and make as much money as possible on before getting banned, which you know will happen eventually, then link spamming is a business model. You just move on to the next site and repeat.

Or maybe you'll even build up a site with a buttload of crappy links, get a good PR and then sell it to an unsuspecting mark becuase of that good PR before Google lays the smack down.

Or maybe you're a huge corporation that Google wouldn't think of banning from the index and you know you can get away with anything. Yep, Google treats the big guys differently than the little guys (gasp!)

So link spamming has it's place for some people. It can work. Google will almost always catch up to you eventually though. And that's why you shouldn't link spam.

I don't think google will catch up in most cases. Plus they can't tell if its the webmaster or just a angry competitor doing it. People always scared of Google will go nowhere IMO. For example, many people are worried what google thinks of paid links. Who cares what they think, your making good money off paid links thats all that matters!

Link spamming may work until their competitor submits a complaint to Google. Then one look at the sites backlink profile, by a human, will send its ranks down to around 950...

I hear Google doesn't look at those complaints. Even matt cutts basically said that.

Exposure will always grant links. So spamming does work.

But it's far more profitable in the long run to learn how to advertise properly so you have to do it less - even if you're using a bot.

you should not generalize all SEOs as spammers. there are all kind of SEOs out there but no self respecting SEO will use any spamming or black hat method to get their or their client's sites ranked on SE.

and in regarding your question on spamming whether it works or not, unfortunately spamming works to some extent. however, you risk of being banned by google cause if you continue to spam, some sites you spam on will report to google or akismet (for blog spamming) and your spamming days are over. spamming is for short term gain, not long term

Google looks at spam complaints, but it may take months for them to get around to it. That's part of their Web Spam team's function. But I would like to read where Matt Cutts has indicated otherwise. Please provide a URL.

Well, spamming might work as a quick fix, but it won't do good if you're planning to be in business for long term..

It all is safe until someone tells on you. If a competitor reports you then all your work will be gone overnight. However, if it's a niche where no one really has any competition then you're free.

Spmming is depends on how SPAMMY you are. My colleague told me that i am spammy, that i should minimize my classified ads posting. After that, i didn't get any sales from my site. So, i therefore conclude that my moderate classified posting (that they see it spammy!) is effective, since i generate sales from that technique!

Link spamming almost drove me insane in the past. To help one client build his brand I was whiter than white for several years, doing everything the hard way to get rank anywhere in what was a very competitive niche. We had reasonable results but every month during this time I got to see new spam sites leap frog his rankings. Some were building 18,000+ links a week! As much as the search engines might not want it to work, it still does.
