If my site is already indexed should I bother to create a sitemap?

I have a site which I bought a few months ago. The site had been well indexed but it does not come with a sitemap. My question is should bother to generate one since it is already indexed?

Well making a sitemap makes more efficient next crawling and missing links can be indexed as well, but it's up to you.

Some people experience a bit of trouble after submitting a sitemap but nothing lasting forever when it comes to pagerank or already indexed pages.

It really won't hurt at all. In fact it will help make sure that Google finds all of your pages. I fully recommend that all of my clients add a Site Map. Also when you link to your internal pages use the anchor text of that page to give it another boost. You can also add new pages to your Site Map to ensure your website is indexed quickly.

I don't make a website without a sitemap. In my opinion it's critical to having a well-spidered website.

You can also create a sitemap even if your site was already indexed...it's better that all of the pages of your site are indexed.

Yes. The site map tells Google when the "last modified date" was and is used to trigger the indexing of that page. It also appears that they also use file size changes.

I supply a new site map weekly for ~ 9,000 page site and get indexed every ~ 4 to 5 days days. It has really helped the "deep index" issue.

You should have a sitemap irrespective of whether you are indexed or not. It tells the search engines the frequency of change of contents in your site and accordingly the search engine sets the crawling rate. Or in other words, this helps to improve the efficiency of search engine visit.

Not a requirement... certainly no real benefits either... it is better to watch your site index with the site: prefix and your server logs than to throw abandon into the wind and assume that a sitemap will solve the structural problems which may be present with your site...

Although they are not required and you wont get the same benifit new sites get from using a site map it is still advisable to use one as it makes life easyer for the SE spiders that crawl the site and you will find you get more pages indexed normally using one compared to not using one.
