I have recently started a few sites. A couple of my sites are 2 months old and have several hundred backlinks. Another site is about a month old and has about 100 backlinks. If if stopped working on SEO and link building today... In six months, would they be ranking just as high in the Search Engines? Would their rankings drop in the Search Engines? Or will there rankings rise in the search engines? Which one of these things do you think is most likely to happen? Actually I am going to keep working on them... However I just wanted to see what everyone thought about this topic.
Since they probably have low traffic it would slowly die down, if you had a website with 100,000 backlinks it would improve itself.
How competitive are your keywords? If the industry or keywords are not too competitive, you may see your rankings go higher gradually and steadily, given the links are good quality links. If the keywords are very competitive, you may not see much happening anytime soon.
I agree with mpls-web-design - it depends on the competition. You'd be wise to study your competitors and not give up on building your sites. It also depends on algo changes and if your links get dropped. If I were to guess I'd say your rankings would drop.
If keywords are less competitive then your site will remain in ranking but for too competitive keywords site will loss rankings because you have not more backlinks.
