if I just register a domain name,

can I assign it to a subdomain

    bellow is my site

    http://ce.sharif.edu/~puramini/

    and when I buy http://forexample.com

can I map the second one to the first without to need a web hosting

You can have a domain forwarded to another domain without having to purchase hosting.

You can buy the domain and set the dns to that host , then set the subdomain and trafer all the other files and folders to that new subdomain.

The way i would do it is

Set subdoamin up as Folder name it any think Folder2 then tranfer all files from the Folder1 to Folder2 then set your subdomain up then tranfer all files and folders from Folder2 to the new subdomain you create.

Hope you understand what i mean.
