If an affiliate site is ranked in first place on the first page in the SERPS

for a certain keyword phrase would it be a good idea to target that phrase (talking about organic traffic) for my site? I don't see any affiliates promoting products using this keyword on PPC...

    Also second unrelated question.....

I chose a keyword last week (it seemed great - had many searches per month and was fairly costly as a keyword) however I have just checked the first page results and one of the big vendors is on the second page for this keyword! (high gravity) so if he can't make it on the first page then there's a pretty high chance it's going be hard for me to make it too?

    thoughts? thanks

If no affiliate are promoting that product using the keyword on PPC, you sure that product sells well? If you want to rank well in organic search, then go ahead.

It's hard for you to rank well just like the big vendor, but it isn't impossible. Hard work pays off...
