I'm looking a buy a certain domain, say www.somename.com. But it is parked. However, www.somename.net and www.somename.org are available. The .com one is of course, nobody using. Also google does not have this domain indexed. Then should I go ahead and buy the .net one or should I drop this name and look for another?
I'd say you should go ahead and purchase it but always have a few options open and a back up plan. 1. You might inquire if you can purchase the .com. 2. You may try to pay a fee and see if you can ever pick it up if 'dropped' someday. 3. Go ahead with your .net, but always be on the lookout for a better domain name. In the end, it's the content or project (functions) that people will read or use and that in turn creates value. Success, Sam
depends if you think its valuable enough.. if you had www.this-is-nice1.com then no point buying net and org If you had www.lovelysite.com , then maybe
I do that all the time. .com is parked and I like the name so what I do is get the .net But I only get the .net if its reasonable keyword rich or brandable type domain. I used to do that with .info but i don't like .info so don't do that anymore with the .info's. Im not a big fan of the .org's either (unless it fits the site). I think you should stick with .net or just find a new domain.
If you see the project going far then inquire into buying the .com domain, after your .net becomes more valuable so does the .com so it's better to buy it when it's cheaper.
Couple things to keep in mind… First buy dot com always over any other LTD. 2nd, just because some guy parked a domain and never developed it does not mean you can’t take it from him. For example, you register the dot net, file for trademark, and create/market the site, then dispute his rights of the domain name, under domain squatting laws.
