If a domain is through your register, can they take it?

I have seen a number of complaints on here saying "my register stole my domain"
Since i do not know what type of powers/access a register has, are they able to take any domain if you are through them, or would they have to have
the password in order to take the domain? and I am not talking about if you pay ontime, the domain has expired. I know it would not
be legal to do so, but do they have that type of power that they could take a domain?

I purchased a high value domain, and I do not want to login
one day to find out my domain has been taken by my register....

    Thanks.

Sure they can. As long as they own the hardware and software to control that domain
    name, why not?

What many registrars won't do is risk their reputation doing that without being able to
"legally" justify that action, especially those catering to endusers like you and me. There
is always an exception like, say, Registerfly, but how many and how often do you hear
    about that?

Like everything else in life, you take your chances. But you best take chances with one
who's pretty much established like, say, NameCheap.

And your registrar's contract can give you a few ideas what they can and won't do.
