You're right on the "technicity" of users.
And any site working properly in Firefox displays properly also in Opera, for what I know. Nevertheless, I when I use Opera, it's for good grounds, and a site which would force me to open Firefox instead would loose me.

I would recommend design for both IE and Firefox, I expect Firefox to continue with its popularity best to design for these two browsers.

I agree - I always test in all browsers. In fact, I always go the extra step, and suggest every other designer do also - to visit the w3c validator and make sure my code is 100% compliant. I find this makes testing in other browsers much, much easier.

I'm not saying you shouldn't bother with Opera when you're designing a site. Your site should always be 100% compliant and you may as well give it a preview in Opera. But if you've got a div which has a little extra margin on it in Opera that it does in IE7 or FF, then I wouldn't bother hacking for just Opera.

My point is your site probably won't appear exactly the same in all browsers, but a good designer makes the effort to make sure it looks good and functional in all browsers.

Well, sure... when working on my sites, if something ends up looking best in IE for some reason while just okay in other browsers and would take a heap of code to adjust those little pixels, I do let IE get the better version as more than 90% of my country uses IE (unfortunately). But generally the only things I find "wrong" in opera is because neither of my copies of Opera have any decent fonts : ) screwing a bit with page layout.

Building common sense comes with experience only. Most of the schools or universities having HTML or web design as subject, hardly give exposure to all the browsers. So I disagree that everyone knows it but Yes every one should realize over a period of time that now its not just enough to design for IE.

    On a lighter note
You wont believe but in certain government institutes the guy who is operating internet since long doesn't know what is firefox, for him whatever comes from microsoft is the software he can use :)

Yea you got a point there. When I learned web design in school they tought us how to use tables (no css whatsoever) and they never mentioned different browsers either lol.

When I first started out I only tested my sites in FF because even if I did something wrong, it would end up looking good in FF anyway (most times). Common newbe mistake I guess :)

Man does Konq stink! I just redid yet another dropdown menu and I don't know what's pissing it off. But, as Gary said, they seem to go in spurts and after another update or so it might be better than Safari is now. Apparently the two teams do share info still.
