The other astonishing thing about government departments, they don't use encryption on files, they do in the movies but not in real life. Why? In case your too stupid to figure out how to decrypt it! Think of all the scandals where they've lost people's details or private information, is encrypting that information with a layer of PGP really that difficult to understand? Banks use encryption, where do you think the German Enigma Cipher came from in WWII.. Government departments should really take a leaf out of the financial services book! That's what happens when they hire Microsoft professionals to work on and endorse their Microsoft product. Security, what Security? Oh they must mean that Windows Anti-Virus and Windows Firewall... (sigh) That must be why the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency insists on OpenBSD.. People do not want a browser that pop's up advertising every five minutes of browsing thanks to the aggressive marketing tactics employed by some of the advertising companies, nor do they want a browser than can suffer from XSS or viral upload attempts along with hidden LSO cookies every-time they look at a flash file. When Microsoft realize this and realize that's what they're users really want is reliability and privacy, they might claw back to being on top. Everytime someone's computer goes down because some spotty fifteen year old nerd sitting in his bedroom has hacked it, is another customer that Microsoft will loose! Microsoft should start afresh with an OpenSource System, they can still charge money for it, apple does and needless to say they could incorporate some real security into it and get rid of the Windows Scripting Host, MSDos and ActiveX. Everyone else is starting to see the Benefit's of going with open source why hasn't Microsoft? Instead their clutching on to an aging system developed in 1982! Let me guess if they developed a secure system, they'd loose all that revenue from advertising companies that pay them to let them screw with people's computers! What's worse loosing advertisers or loosing customers? If I was Steve Ballmer I would call up the shareholders and say "Sorry, but we as a company can no longer afford, endorse or support your continued aggressive advertising and marketing via our product, as we have concluded that it is a conflict of our customers interest's, therefore in light of this, your fired!" then I would go out and hire some talented open source developers! "This business is a living organism, multiplying constantly surrounded by predators, There's no room for idle time or second guessing, New discoveries are made hourly. New ideas are ready to be devoured and redefined. This business is binary you are a one or a zero, alive or dead" Gary Winston (N.U.R.V - CEO)
