Online dating is a very tough niche to get started in. Especially now with so many competitors out there. I think the only way to do it is find a special niche, ie, a certain geographic location, or demographic or cultural type. If you choose location I would advertise offline in local news papers, flyers, etc. For cultural type, ie hippies, 50 and over, hispanic christians, etc. I would find popular sites for this cultural type and advertise heavily there.
I agree with thewindmaster, it is very hard to break into the dating biz. There are so many sites out there that unless you narrow your market, you will be a small fish in a big ocean. You can try promoting on other dating related sites like dating directories, dating advice sites and other types. MySpace bulletins and comments help some but you do not get quality members who will make you money. You can try publishing articles about dating and include a link to your site. Try all the social bookmarking sites like stumble upon. If you focus locally, you may want to run ads in the newspaper and on the radio. Flyers also can bring in some members. Good luck!
Choose a specific niche, preferably a vertical base, Use Craigslist, myspace and similar SN sites for promotion without abusing them, also IMO instead of reviewme try out sponsoredreview.

If it's possible to break into the niche, I agree this is the way to do it... But just like the windmaster said, it's going to be an uphill battle against the already entrenched "big guys"...
There lot ways to do it, One bid on key words, most of all get members good profiles some fake and all at first but it helps.
massive, massive press release campaign? don't know why I am hooked on the idea, but maybe it would work
