Ideally, what should be the link count (no. of links) in sitemap page so that spider can crawl it effectively?

in sitemap you put numbers of link 100 or 200 so its not effect on site bcz you submit your sitemap in google webmaster tool so google spider automatically update daily your all pages

I think you should include your all pages in sitemap (which ever page is present on your site and you are showing them live should be linked in Sitemap). It will help crawler to crawl your site fast and easily.

    Thanks

for large site the count is 40000 in one site map.

you can create index site-map and submit it in Google webmaster tool.

For Small Sites add all pages in one site-map.
