Will the lack of "blog" in my domain name set me back in google searches and such?

No. Just make domain names for blog same way you do for website. Find good keywords and try to find domaine name with some of them in it.

What keywords should I look for if i'm writing a broad blog? It's not about any niche but rather about my life and thoughts in general.

What are you trying to rank for ? Something with the key word blog in it ? Having the name blog in your domain will help you, but it isn't like you cannot rank without having it

No, having blog in your domain name doesn't make it any more blog than without the word. Infact most of big blogs have unique name rather than having some keyword. For example my blog was my earlier site - The Credence , now no one can think that its a blog name but I liked it hence chose it to be my blog :)

I guess you don't want to rank for blog...so no it won't hurt you. Just make sure you focus on your topic and make the blog just about that instead of all random things

Try to make your domain name match your topic in one way or the next. If you are writing on anything and everything, you could try something general; maybe use your name in it...
