If the proposal is accepted by ICANN's board then almost any extension that is 64 characters or less could be used.

The exact price to register these new names isn't yet known, but some experts predict it could cost about $50,000 to register a new domain name.

    What?

That means I could have www.zuko.zukorocks. Any extension that I wanted for the low low price of $50k.

That's a nuts idea... will simply lead to confusion with joe public.

50,000 to register a new TLD, if i read it correctly. It means i could start a TLD of "sucks" and have www.<company>.sucks or www.<politician>.sucks and for every TLD registered it could have infinite domains under it.

well 50k is still high for noobs, but pretty affordable for companies and guys with deep pockets. however, .com is the mother of all domains ;-)

Yeah, its really a dumb thing to do. The worst thing about it is that its just going to give all the best domains to large companies and the very rich.

    Yeah

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7475986.stm

No idea how it will work. As Dapper pointed out, how long till people (albeit rich people) start registering domains like .wantstof**k .sucksmyd**k and other pleasent domains.

How will it affect seo now that anyone can have a keyword rich domain?!

Not to bad from this point of view.
ICANN can get some more money, there will be a lot of cities in legal fights over these as well. The Wall STreet Journal had a great inside story about it this morning and you might enjoy the 300 to 500.000.00 USD pricres that they are voting on as well.
.com will be fine in our opinion. I do not think we are going to fight to get .viper for ourselves at those prices.

I herd on TV today that it is now official, so I guess it was approved by ICann today? This has been on every TV station, newspaper and what have you over here. They are pronouncing it as the next Internet gold rush already so the general public are going to be fully prepared when the new names come on the market. This is not going to play well for current domainers, I think we might just lose value on our current domains but I guess good .com's could still hold their value, we will have to see...

Just imagine.. for Coca Cola... instead of having to have their domain . every single country tld... now they can have their own TLD, as in .coke! Or, simply: http://coke lol :D

It won't affect domainers. Firstly, most domains are less than $50,000 each in value, therefore its not like "whatever.com" is suddenly worthless because someone can buy "whatever.something". Even if you own "games.com" its more valuable that "games.games" or anything retarded like that.

It's nothing but ICANN cashing in BIG. And honestly, its stupid. I'm never going to remember www.homepage.mystupidbankthinksitsclever

Its hard enough remembering .info, .net etc. I have always noticed a higher return visitor count for .com then anything else (those sites you've been to but don't quite remember - do you type in "nameyouthink.com" or "nameyouthink.net"... exactly) Most people don't even know .net, .info etc they only visit them because they clicked a link.
