I think xxx would have been a good idea, it would be easier to keep up with all the trashy porn sites then.

That's what I thought. Not about the trashy porn sites <ahem> but about it being a good idea

Apparently the religious right likes to stumple onto porn - can't blame them though.

However shame on ICANN for bowing to pressure.

Would that really get porn out of the way?

I doubt it, actually it would have helped it.

I am happy it was abandoned.

And we know the porn sites would only exist on .xxx domains, right?

Like all the .com, .net, etc ones would give up their domain name and move over to .xxx - if .xxx was made and only porn sites created there, it should have happened - oh I dunno - a decade or so ago. Attempting to categorize the net via .???s is silly at this point.

yeah but why not have it availible?

even if only 10% of the porn sites were on the xxx domains that would be 10% that porn blockers would block 100% of the time

wern't they coming out with .travel and .jobs, would those be considered silly too?

Yeah, all of these new .???'s are kinda corny. I get the point of it, but its entirely too late for them to be categorizing things like that.

Everyone knows .com, .gov, .mil etc etc

If domain squatting weren't allowed, there'd be more free domains out there that'd never be used, but you have all these squatters sitting on a word with no intent ever to use it, just hoping someone buys it for a load of money.

Let's assume I had a porn domain that I WANTED to put in front of a kid. Knowing that XXX domains are blocked, why would I want to make it an XXX domain? Its silly. Besides, unless ICANN (or whoever) makes each registrant fill out some domain-intent form, keeping "new" porn sites out of .com, .net or even .kids would be impossible.

 the point is that Christians and the rest of the religious maniacs have once again ruined a good thing.

wow, 6000 morons say they dont like something, so now the other 200kazillion people in the world have to deal with it, its absolutely fucking stupid and its all because of religion. funny thing is they re so far out in lala land they cant even see that it would actually HELP them keep their kids from seeing porn.

:it would have enabled parent to BLOCK .xxx

sure in the very near time not all porn would be on .xxx
but give it 20 years or so and it would have all worked out, it would have been like the playboy channel is on TV. it would be easily blocked.

PLUS, now because of these religious people, now the rest of the word has to deal with it as well. this at a time when the world is demanding control over the internet, this is the type of stupid shit thats going to make us lose control of the internet, STUPID STUPID STUPID on the part of icann, bush, and the religious people. maybe when we lose control of the internet and it crashes everyone will be happy. keep up the good work, see you in church on sunday

as long as .info is used for information and .name for people and .se only for swedish sites it might work. But it just isn't that way now, why should it be when you introduce a new tld ? I would LOVE to have hotel.xxx, loan.xxx, viagra.xxx etc. (ok, viagra is X-related, but you get my point)

When ARPANET started out, COM, EDU ORG NET and MIL were a big mistake. You yankees never thought of the possibility that other countries might want to join, but ok, different times, different ideas.

Later came country TLDs. And even more later came .US. A hostname has been { server . network . provider . country } for years now, why do you want to introduce a fake country like xxx or info ? What about a swedish porn site, should it be www.sex.xxx.se ? doesnt make sense...

[you may only red rep me for this thread if you were not born in the US of A]

youre missing the main point, we MUST NOT screw with the internet like this or we will lose control of the internet and places like iran and china will have part control. trust me, porn is like daytime cartoons compared to what places like iran and china would do to the net. its just not cool, even if half the country said they didnt want it, it should mean nothing. the more we screw with the net like this the more the rest of the world is going to demand control.
