ICANN & IANA hijacked today

The official domains of ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority were hijacked earlier today, by the NetDevilz Turkish hacking group which also hijacked Photobucket’s domain on the 18th of June. Zone-H mirrored the defacements, some of which still remain active for the time being.

We're going into a new era of threats. Dancho's keeping detailed updates of what's going on. This guy rocks. I think it will be good for everyone concerned to bookmark his blog http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/06/icann-and-ianas-domain-names-hijacked.html

I'd also like to see what can be done to fight these threats and what people would contribute to their defence.

For instance if some groups come up with projects together with authorities to monitor and fight the culprits, would you be ready to give some of you PC's/notebook's resources to create a network of tight surveilence and strategies to trap them? (if that is possible) I'm not a techie but think something like this will be the only way to get them caught.

This problem was caused by plain old stupidity.

Someone convinced someone at Register.com to do something they never should have done. Someone needs to be fired and Register.com's accreditation should be subject to review.

This never should have happened in the first place; software and business protocol checks should have been in place to prevent this time of problem.

Your not going to find the person(s) responsible unless they are incredibly stupid which is definitely a possibility. The problem is that it is likely just kids being kids as it appears that it was done just for attention.

They hacked my server last year and messed up all my html files. It was weird that they only went after those.
