Yep... and so far the argument has been, "They can, so they do."

You better go back to the link, and look at the new link posted there. The State of California is going to pass a law just for Gmail, it says that they CAN NOT store email after it is deleted by the user.

Why does Google want to keep your Gspymail after you delete it? So that they can build a comprehensive profile on your history and habits to provide advertisers with better targeting of promotions.

Remember that 95% of Google profits are from ADVERTISING, they use their data mining spyware to support the ADVERTISING BUSINESS and DATA MINING BUSINESS that they run.

    Seach Engine

    Gmail

    Orkut

    Toolbars

    Puffin

    Blogger

Are simply tools and software programs they use to engage in the ADVERTISING and DATA MINING BUSINESS.

How do you know Google even stores email after a user deletes it? That's what I'm asking.

There are laws in place saying I can't spam, and I never did before the law was in place. There are laws that say I can't kill people, but even if there were no such law, it's not something I would do.

And of course Google is in the advertising business. That's where they generate their revenue from. If they can come up with ways to give me ads that are more targeted towards my personal tastes, I'm all for it. That would be infinitely better than Yahoo or MSN's approach to just bomb you with millions of irrelevant ads. I would rather have 1 block of relevant ads as opposed to 50 blocks of irrelevant ads mucking up the webpage I'm on any day.

ROFL - thank you compar for the laugh.

As far as google goes, I believe they are data mining in the sense they take the information to tarket ads. What ad company doesn't do this in one way or another with the technology they have? I only get a little irritated when I get golf ads to my e-mail when we do sell golf stuff, but when I get porn ads, I get really pissed, who says I want any of those ads? Now if the porn guys had the technology google has I wouldn't be getting there crap.

If you want to sue someone, go after the spyware companies such as Gator, gain, or whatever today's name is. These are the guys who have no morals or respect to anyone but their walet.

BTW, I am not saying google is perfect or that they have high morals or anything, but if gmail is datamining and I don't want to be a part of it then I don't sign up and use there service or send an e-mail to a gmail address if I felt I didn't want it to be used in that way.

What I think Google is doing really falls under that auspices of market research, only by using the power of the computer they can bring this right down to a personal level.

Now Anthony are you opposed to all market research?

Lets suppose everything you say about Google's datamining is correct, what are your concerns and why are you so upset. In this modern world the only way to prevent people collecting data about you is to go and live in a cave.

I have said before, and it seems to annoy you, that you have some conspiracy theory, but that surely is what you have. You must believe that Google is conspiring to injury us all in some nefarious way. How do you think they are going to do that?

I think when people are asking you for proof they are not asking about whether or not Google can or does collect data about our habits, but more do you have any proof of them using this in ways that will or do harm us?

Question, have any of you really read the articles in the links that I left?

I do not think you would keep asking the same questions over and over if you had read any of them.

I can tell you that most of you are making judgements with your heads in the sand, since it seems that none of you have even read any of the articles linked to my posts.

Google has you where they want you, uneducated and assuming that they are good.

When even one of you can tell me what the title of even one of the articles linked is, I will address any questions you have, but since no one here seems to be able to click on a link and read them, I really can not help you.

Title's of some of your articles... Google or Gooyear, Page Rank, Google's favorite toy!, etc.

So now that you are willing to answer my questions, here goes (again):

    • What evidence do you have that shows Google is storing emails on gmail after the user deletes them?

    • What evidence do you have that Google alters AdSense ads and/or search results based on the user's surfing habits?

Actually, I'm not quick with criticism at all and I certainly havn't criticized any one else in this forum. I am extremely open minded. Aggressive? Definately. (Shawn is the passive-aggressive one
    :D ).

As for prolonging the battle, I just havn't received answers to any of the questions I posed to anthonycea. I think it's annoying when you can't back up your theory with anything other then, "go to my website". It's beginning to sound like he's just trying to drive traffic to his site...

Forum singular or forum collectively? You certainly gave me a pretty good shot one time. In fairness you also gave me some high praise on another occassion.

The reason I commented is that I wrote several posts trying to talk Anthony down from his aggressive stance. I no sooner hit the submit button on the last one and you jumped in and stirred him up again. I frankly was a little incredulous.

Shawn, have you heard of local search? Google will be able to provide local results based on users IP.

I did not ask if you seen any of the titles of the pages on the searchwars website, I asked if you read any of the articles linked from those pages?

Cut and pasted from Gmail privacy policy. You can get the rest on your own

Because we keep back-up copies of data for the purposes of recovery from errors or system failure, residual copies of email may remain on our systems for some time, even after you have deleted messages from your mailbox or after the termination of your account.

The above is from Google's Gmail privacy policy. That is what the law in California will change if passed. You can see the links on the proposed law in the "Privacy Google" pages in the searchwars links provided in this thread.

VS I do not care about driving traffic to the website, but I am not going to rewrite everything just for you sweet.

Of course... geotargeting based on IP address is not the same as using the toolbar to monitor the user's web surfing habits though. Google also geotargets results based on the country you are in.

    Regarding the backup copies of email not being allowed, that's really not going to affect or hurt Google in anyway. Would only hurt consumers because if there is a hardware failure of a single machine, then all their email is lost. {shrug}

Do you really believe Google is spying on users because they backup their servers?

Bottom line is I still have not seen any evidence of Google "spying" on users surfing habits (from you or anyone else).

I don't remember criticizing you, Compar, so if I did, I apologize. Sometimes my twisted sense of humor doesn't translate in writing
    :D .

I was unaware that you were trying to talk him down, I just figured all the praise he was lavishing upon you was softening you up :p .

After spending a fair amount of time reading through this thread I have come to two conclusions.

    1. Anthony needs to get outside more often
    2. Spending a Friday on the deck at Lahaina's with some of MB/PB's finest would do him some good. Probably a whole bunch of people there that would love to hear his theories of the eminent Google global domination.

    Anthony,

I read several pages from the CBT site and nowhere did I see Google named specifically.

I also think that you insult us by suggesting that we don't understand what you are trying to get at. We are not stupid. We don't have to read your web site or the CBT cover to cover to know that you are concerned about people collecting personal information that you think should be private.

As I said earlier you simply can't stop people or companies collecting information about you. The telephone company knows every call you make. The credit card companies have a record of all your purchases. You bank knows both your incoming and out going transactions.

If you buy your clothes from a quality men's shop one of the features that sets them above the run of the mill store is that they know your every measurement, what side you dress on, and that you like blue oxford cloth shirts with button down collars. The fact that they are interested enough to collect all this information is supposed to be what makes them a superior merchant.

We have a new toll highway in Canada that uses very modern technology so that you are never inconvenienced by stopping at toll booths. You can enter and leave this highway at 100 MPH if you like and they will either take your picture or if you have one of their transponders record you entry and exit that way. So here is a the use of modern technology collecting and preserving information about your movement. But they do it in a completely unobtrusive way. You don't have to slow down. You don't have to have the right change. You just keep driving.

My point is the more technology we have the more information will be available about us. If this is used to punish or control us in any way it is a bad thing. But if it is use to enrich our lives and give us more control and more freedom then that is a good thing.

I would agree with you that we need to be vigilant at all times, but the simple fact that someone has access to information about us doesn't automatically mean that they are using it to harm, inconvenience or injure us.

I don't think we are being pollyanna about Google, but I think it is fair to say that based on the evidence to date they have been a pretty trustworthy and benevolent corporation.

So we continue to ask you for proof to the contrary. You are not making any points by refusing to give solid evidence. If you have any proof beyond vague accusations and inuenndos then present it.

The people on this forum have been much kinder to, and more tolerant of, your position than most forums. Quit calling us idiots and show us real evidence of what we should be concerned about.

You keep alluding to some superior inside knowledge. Don't keep it to yourself. Show it to us. I think we can handle it.

    Transfer of information.

Personal information collected by Google may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Google Inc. or its agents maintain facilities. By using Gmail, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country.

We reserve the right to transfer your personal information in the event of a transfer of ownership of Google, such as acquisition by or merger with another company. In such an event, Google will notify you before information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

The above is cut and pasted from the Google Gmail privacy policy

Seems like a pretty normal cookie-cutter privacy policy to me. Compared to Yahoo and MSN, Google's privacy policy is much better for the consumer. Yahoo and MSN reserve the right to share your information with 3rd parties, etc.

Google is basically saying they have multiple data centers throughout the world. Your info may be at different geographical locations because of that. They also say your email in gmail is backed up.

Truthfully, it seems like the things you are questioning about Google are done for the good of the consumer. Everyone knows backing up is good practice. And Google's multiple data centers is to make Google faster for everyone.

If every Google user in the world was piped into a single data center, on a single computer, with no backup, I don't think it would work out very long. :)

Yes Anthony, but so what? Where is the conspiracy? How am I harmed?

The telephone company wouldn't both either to warn you in advance or notify you when they get taken over.

To me Google is going out of their way to be above board and responsible. Why are you only leading the charge against them? What did Google do to harm you?

One reason this statement is in the policy is so that if California or the US Government creates laws that are not favorable to Google they will simply shift operations to a country that has favorable laws to them.

If they think that the threat of moving Google to Timbucktoo or where ever will keep the lawmakers at bay they are wrong.

The privacy trend is one Microsoft will market into in the next version of their OS, they will by default show all users control boxes on activeX installations, keeping these programs from being installed without complete disclosure and permission from the computer user.

Also the government will outlaw current spyware programs that transfer information to third parties without complete disclosure or more complete disclosure of the type of information being transmitted back to third parties (Google)
