I wish to open up a directory and make it a successful one. Can you please give me some tips regarding it? I have following question:

    1. Which is better: Bidding directory or an ordinary one?
    2. Shall I make it general or target a niche?
    3. Shall I make it free or a paid one?
    4. How can I make it more popular?

I will be very glad if you help me out.

    Thanks.

both directories types like a bidding directory or a ordinary director are performing well, my suggestion for you to make a niche directory with some review fee.
If you want any more information contact me via msn i will support you.

First, decide which directory script you want to use. I use qlWebDS - Directory Script on 10 of my directories and find it very superior. The Premium version gives you what no other directory script can offer. You can see all the features here.

    1. I would go with one of which. When you gain experience, you'll know which is best for you.
    2. Same as #1. Go with General and try another one as a niche.
    3. Being totally new, I think originally you can only be free.
    4. Promote and Submit to other directories and blogs.

    Good Luck!

I would not even consider going for a general directory, the competition is too stiff. Do a niche one on a topic you enjoy personally and that will be your best chance for success.

Be patient. Read up. Network. Submit to others. You can make it free, but still charge for some like featured and reviews, etc. so you'll recup some of your money and time invested. Just make sure it's something you feel will reward you for the time invested into it and you'll feel successful in doing one. And keep coming back to DP! :) Good luck.

I think I will open a niche directory and promote it here in DP by selling free links in freebies section..then will add paid submissions..DP is a cool forum

try and go about your business without DP. relying on DP would cause you serious problems if it suddenly vanished or you got banned.

    use a normal web directory
target a niche that you enjoy working with
and loads of unique content in and around the directory
market it like any other site.

first off!! making, running and operating a web directory takes a lot of time!! just the other day you told me that you are burdened by your collage workload! i suggest you not to start a directory if you don't have sufficient time, rather start a blog, you are a good writer and a blog will be helpful for you!

anyways, if you still want to start a directory, go with a niche directory! go with a niche that you like most, something on which you can add more articles and blogs[Hint: You are good at health niche;)]!! use phpld, and make a regular directory!:)
    cheers!

    Ordinary, without a doubt.

How big is your team? If it's just you, go for a fairly narrow niche. You can't hope to usefully review submissions from the entire English-speaking web unless you have a way to recruit at least a hundred or so editors.

Up to you, but no-one will pay until you invest some money in it. Would you pay for links in a cookie-cutter directory with no advertising budget?

Well I`m admin of 4 free directories

    www.dropwin.com
    www.dvuw.com
    www.thisisquality.com
    www.universallinks.net

So you can check this out. And I will tell you, I prefer phpLD. It means php Link Directory ( ordinary one ). In first 4-5 months you should be free directory. So, people will coming and submiting and you will get more visits. When you get some nice PR like 3-4 you should work on paid directory but only set Regural Links with Reciprocal for free. If you wanna know something about my directories I will be glad to help you.Just pm me or add me on MSN.

    Thanks!

    Dennis ;)

I think everyone here has been great with help & will throw a few cats among the pidgeons for you to ponder.

It is a common theme for people to say go neiche, and this may be correct but i also believe that the quality general directory has room and in reality is just many nieches in one.

Also a common theme is to start free, yet we also see many people complaining about free directories turning paid etc, also to build, maintain and promote a quality directory takes cash so give that some thought as it is possible to combine free / paid with general / featured listings.

Lastly your decision seemed to mirror more so what others have suggested but i think it is very important that you sit down and plan out on paper the directory you would like to end up with, then back step that to smaller building blocks, so that as it builds it starts to resemble your plans and goals.

You will see many good directory owners say this game takes passion and a lot of hard work, time and money, consider all of these things before starting then when ready fire your dream up and then bunker in for the haul and don't stop until you reach the summit then pause and enjoy the view, good luck with your directory.
