do you mean number of times you can submit to google? if so than you can submit every minute for a year and never get banned.

and if you mean how many links google accepts in a site map, the limit is 500.

thanks, i'm not sure is a site map just for pages for you site, i was talking about the amount of inbound links they will accept i heard that if you submit to heeps of directories in a day that google would drop all your links or something like that, is it true or am i way off the mark.

if the rate of which you gain links dosnt look natural, google may treat it as spamming and reduce it or even drop it from the index. There isnt an exact number of how many links.

An example would be if a site dosnt gain any backlinks for a few months, then over a few days it gains 8000 backlinks all containing the same anchor text

I support this opinion, that gaining links must be careful, resembling the natural way of citation of the site.

Common wisdom is that no amount of backlinks can hurt your site, because otherwise you could submit your competitor's site to 5000 directories and harm them. This view makes sense and is consistent with what google say.

Even a new site can get on Digg etc and get 1000's of new links very quickly, and should not expect to be penalised.

But, my personal experience is that on the one time I did get a mass directory submission service for a site - perhaps 400 directories all with the same anchor text, done as a test - the site did disappear from the SERPS for a long time after. Could be coincidence, sandbox, or something else, but I haven't done it since to find out.

I would be inclined to go for steady growth, especially for a site less than 6 months old.

yes but the site will probably continue to gain 1000's more links so it will seem natural... and if not, they'll most likely slow down at a steady rate

I have heard success stories about suden increase of BL for a new site and google didnt frown.

I think that when you are thinking of how many links is too much, either you have extra ordinary ressource to build links, i that is the case start selling links building package. Or you have alot of money to invest.

i had a site on the front page of digg and it picked up thousands of links quickly without any penalty, in fact the rankings went higher after the digg......

In reality, no their shouldn't be any limits, and their aren't but if you grow to fast, Google might see it as Spam. In a perfect world, if every webmaster was honest, and didn't spam every directory, blog, and any place they could throw their link - then I'm sure Google's ALGO would be different. But we live in a world where backlinks have become more important than content.

I remember the days when SEO meant building your html to have semantic markup with fresh content. If you had original content, the traffic would come. Now for every original page, theirs thousands of spam or mfa sites.

Wow, sorry about the rant there :)

there is no limit you can do just not too much in one time i would suggest few hundreds/day is already a lots. try to seperate the no. through make it even for the whole month,so it wont look so suspicious. get a good and relavant links not just spam any type of links.

I don't think there is something like limit for the links. If you are giving natural links then Google will definitely view them.

Google is much smarter than you.

G can determine things *you* do versus things that some else does to you and will get the determination correct 90% of the time. If someone outsmarts them, it will not be for long.

So, yes, market your site. Submit to a *few* directories, quality directories with strict guidelines. Write some articles. But, do *not* try to fool Google with tricks. You will lose that game every time.

There is no set standard, just as long as the links look as natural as possible, Google are not about to reveal those type of secrets anyway
