Please look over both of my sites www.pittdesign.com and roguedeals.com and offer your thoughts, opinions, and recommendations as to how I could improve them. My thoughts on www.pittdesign.com is that it needs more images and needs to shy away from the 'blogger' format. I don't think my site 'tells a story' yet, which I need it to in order to sell people on my services. I feel once I get better images and a better flow going, I think it will do better. My current thoughts are that the www.roguedeals.com one does not present the content in a way that is eay to follow. It is in a blogger format and I think that hurts my target audience. I think if someone is looking for a good deal, they aren't really concerned with reading a lot. But... then again, I am trying to do something different... because a lot web sites present content in the same way. So, I think its a blessing and a curse. I am trying to make the content more 'personal' yet still make it easy to go through. Please give me some feed back! Thanks! I'm not afraid of criticism, so don't be shy.
PittDesign: why so narrow? It's like 700 pixels wide. The navigation menu on the right is like 40% of the width of the page. And, I don't really know what you do...is it a web design site? You should have some clear title that says something like " web design for consumer electronics stores " or whatever you do. I like the css gallery sites for inspiration... Roguedeals: this is much better looking. And I like the interactive features like audio and video. There isn't much you need to do with this one.
Yes, nice sites. Good design, balanced colour and use of images, not overwhelming or detracting. Some good techniques with navigation and menus. I would suggest, however, that the color of the little bar above the horizontal menu at the right, which are supposed to indicate active choice I guess should use more contrast for the highlighted item. I could hardly differentiate it. Last, and probably most importantly, this site suffers from fixed layout. It is a really poor example of your obvious skills in desgning and setting up web sites. Do make the effort of going to a fluid dsign. The site will still be seen as it is currently if that is the wish of the visitor. There can be absolutely no reason to impose such a limit on any site today.
Good points. I simply don't have the time right now to work on my own site (as ridiculous as that sounds). But I realize how freakin' narrow it is. I think it's still 'okay' for now. But I agree with you, I need to change it when time allows. Thanks for the suggestions.
Not so catchy for a portfolio. And why so narrow? Try a lot darker colors if you love narrow. Way better than PittDesign.
Pittdesign -I feel the same.It was too narrow and its like 700 pixels wide. The navigation menu on the right is not fair and may be 50% of the width of page. You need to add a brief content. Rouguedeals---It looks cool and by adding a better logo will give additional features to your site.
Hi - I am for Pittsburgh too 1 thing I noticed right away that is not a wise SEO move - linking one site of yours to another site of yours. Speaking of SEO - both your sites need work in that area. Your meta and H tags are not working nearly as well for you as they could...
I only looked at PittDesign for now. I agree, it is too narrow, it's the first thing that strikes you when viewing the site. As if the content is a little squashed, you can see it clearly when clicking the VOICESOFBECK section, the comment form barely fits the borders. The color mix is good, as someone said, non intrusive. I like the images in the Header, maybe the text on the buttons should be a little bigger. Oddly enough, I really like narrow layouts, they work well in all Browsers, but this one is just a little bit too narrow...
Hi true -too thin - I think pushing that out to 900 would give you more area to display in - also consider getting plogger or highslide to display your portfolio - would give it a great loo - I do like the blue background - def pulls your eyes into focus.
