I want to start a webhost...

The problem is, is that I know I wont be able to compete with the dirt cheap prices seen in the web hosting forum here as I do not have a huge amount of capital.

    Anybody got any solutions?

If you're trying to make money, selling at dirt cheap prices is not going to work, well atleast its going to be really hard to get customers and make a profit that is worth your time.

What you need to build a successful web hosting service is target a specific niche (ex hosting for photographers) or a specific location (ex hosting in your local city).

If you are going to host your own servers, I recommend www.softlayer.com
If you are going to resell web hosting, I would recommend you signup as reseller with us http://resellers.fadnet.us

Obviously the above two options wouldn't work if you're trying to compete based on the lowest price. More suited for if you're going after a specific niche.

Go for reseller first !!! and when you will have your 50-60 clients in hand you can go for Dedicated Server !!

Web hosting is a very crowded market. Heavy competition, and for the last 6 or so years, it's been a race to the bottom, in terms of price. Bandwidth is cheap, and storage has increased and the price to provide both has dropped.

I foresee the day when web hosting is free for everyone via P2P implementation.

Unless you're going after the high-end managed dedicated server market targeted towards businesses, I'd steer clear of web hosting. Shared hosting is clearly only a numbers game. High volume customer base is the name of that game.

And I think practically every niche space for web hosting and web design markets has been occupied for quite some time.

You can get a dedi, be online for a few months and go offline like all the others :(.
It's too hard, you had to start a few years ago. The whole market is destroyed now :(.
I tried to start too, and now Im sitting here with a dedi and no customers :(.

Believe it or not people care more about uptime, support, and things like bandwidth/disk space..etc rather than price. If you've tried a number of different web host's then you will notice usually the cheapest ones are the crappiest ones. Like others have said..offer 24/7 support/online support, come up with different promo sales, have a nice looking, easy to use site, and make your plans fair and affordable..It's a crowded market but there are people starting new site's daily..they have to have it hosted somewhere :)

That used to be the case. But since everyone offers pretty much the same uptime, support, and things like bandwidth/disk space..etc, the only thing left is price. And believe me, price is where it's at with hosting these days.

Another reason why it's difficult to compete is because web hosting customers will usually stick around awhile, even if their host sucks, they won't switch that quickly. I know of one large web hosting company who's reputation is terrible, many complaints, horrible BBB record, yet they've remained in business right through it all.

While I sort of agree with you, I think you're being a little too simplistic.

I pay about $15 per month to host a whole bunch of sites. My host has been quite good, I haven't really many complaints. If downtime or support started to be lousy, I'd have no problem switching to a host that charges $20-$30 per month if I was sure the service would be great.

I know what you mean - some people wont bother to switch - but some certainly will.

Giving webhosting at cheap race is not a matter of race , the net geeks still focus on quality rather than quantity , So go and establish a webhosting company. Start with vps from www.liquidweb.com if you have low capital and then make marketing of your websites , buy adword account , and buy adspaces on webhosting forums.

    Thanks

There are a lot of good thoughts in this thread, but I think to start a webhost it will takes a lot of money and effort to keep it running.

There are plenty of Hosting companies out there and some of theme are huge, you wont be able to compete with them.

Hahaha...that has to be the funniest thing I've read in a while. You might get killed if you posted that on WHT.

But you're right in a way, everyone claims to offer the same thing, some without even knowing what they're offering. But not everyone lives up to it.

Personally, you want a reputable distributor for your server or reseller.

When you make your plans, I reccomend you don't over sell. It's obvious when a company over sells. Take a look at HostGator.

You start small, in any industry. Don't expect your money fast.
