    Hello,

"I want to start a directory. How much can I make?"

This seems to be a popular topic on these forums. Every couple of days someone else ask the same thing...over and over again...

For those of you wondering what are directories and how can you monetize them, here is an excellent post by Pete (DownUnder) on UK SEO Forums

I would sugest to every guy willing to build a new directory to read the post first and think twice.

Well when you start I suggest you do a few submissions of your own directory to a few other directories so that your backlinks and hits can increase.

Try READING the initial post, rather than just adding your .o2 without comprehending what the thread is offering first.

Post counts will get you nowhere.

I've never really spent much on directories..
30$ for the script, and a few dollars for the domain. Then maybe 100$ for initial indexing.. A few sig links and I can make 5 - 10$ a week with 5 mins a week maintenance..

I know others can make a lot more by putting more work into it.. It's just not really something I want to spend 8 hrs a day working on..lol

There is much better pay for a lot more enjoyable work on the net up for grabs. :D

LOL Dan what are you doing to me mate, i hiding out down in the basement flying low and you post that :)

I do not know i am authority on the subject though , there are many here ( unseen mostly ) that have it sorted.

As for making / spending the $, i have just sent of a summary of discussion for a meeting wednesday with my web team for the next round of work.

This meeting is just discussion only and will cost me more than most spend on thier intire directory (well the cheaper ones ), after the meeting i am guessing depending on costs to impliment my next round of mods to take costs above or close to 20K before i start and can see if i pull the entire package of under 50K i would be happy but not counting just yet.

:) directories who invented them /

There is too many directories out there today. It is better to think of something unique and build that up. That way you have less competition and you can earn a lot more money because you aren't competing w/ the big wigs. Make a forum of some type that isn't to general. Always good money there.

Just to get this thread back "on thread":

    1) thanks for the link, I would suggest that we try and get the post stickied, as there are these questions on a daily basis here, and it will prevent the un-necessary creation of the same

    2) does anyone really think that the traditional ways of monetizing directories will still work in 12 months in the current climate of change with google?
