It's kind of hard to say. I'd say stick to the big niches like make money online, weight loss, etc. If you've got something specific that interests you, then go with that. Either way if you can get people posting then you'll get traffic and can run adsense/affiliate promotions.

The MMO niche will never be saturated. There will always be broke newbies looking for a way and it has been that way for a long time now even before I got into it myself. Give them a home on your forum and they can become your customer base.

Fitness has always got people who would congregate online in odd places. They'd make up questions like: "how can i get / lose / gain X in Y amount of time", I know because I would type those phrases out on Google. Those kinds of people are always looking or buying the lastest high tech magic pill that will help them achieve their goals for the sake of vanity / power / etc.

Another mostly untapped one is martial arts. There will always be people who are afraid or victims of getting mugged / harassed / etc. So give them a place to share their experiences. Eventually you'll get; "What's the most powerful martial art in the world" debates on your forum. This is founded in wrath.

Relationships or the "how to get laid" forum. Lot's of young single men out there need a place to stay online where they can plot or fantasize. Use lust to tap into their desires to make as many notches on their bed post if that they can. If you want examples visit player / dating sites and watch for ads that sound like "buy the 4 letters that will make any women do XXX with you" and so forth.

I used to hangout on a gaming message board before it tanked due to the population leaving (gamespy network) and I remember lots of personal issues, dramas, bleeding out into Gaming / Off-Topic discussion. Instead of talking about games we talked about getting bullied at school, shared advice, etc. So you can focus your site on that and drop products along the lines of Personal Development and might even actually help a few people.

There is religion of course if you have noticed that I have been dropping the words: greed, vanity, wrath, lust

Basically imagine helping people get what they want. It's not that hard to choose because there is no magic choice and no one here can make that choice for you. They can however share their experience in starting online communities. But it all comes down to helping people get what they want.

Ask yourself, what do people want? Do they want to share cat pictures all day? Do they want to talk about becoming vigilante super heroes? Each of these things have products with affiliate programs that you can slap onto your site so you can't really go wrong.

Of course I should mention that maybe you should be less vague.

    Example:

    Niche: Martial arts
    - Self Defense
    -- Magic Pill Defendu

Even the dating thing with with those player wannabe guys gets divided into something like this:

    Niche = Relationships
    - Get Laid Now Guides
-- Mysterious Method at Getting Laid now

I have personally seen this anti-Player forum called PUAhate. It's the only one in existence and it has members. That's a really good example of laser targeting a niche right there.

You need to choose a niche that you have a lot of experience with. Something that you can literally write ten thousand posts about. Once you do that get vbulletin+hostgator and create your forum just how you like it. Once you have it built spend a few hundred dollars more and get an arsenal of paid posters (around 10-15 accounts) and for $0.10/post/thread (20% threads 80% posts) you can offer $20/account and get 40 threads/160 posts/account (you may want to split this into 60-100 accounts. That will give your forum an active look and feel allowing you to begin advertising it.

I'm a firm believer on choosing a niche that you are well-versed in, interested in, and can improve people's lives with your knowledge. Self-help is a fantastic niche and there is a lot of money to be made.

    Hope that helps.

Look into paid membership forums and see what is out there. Membership forums can earn some big money if done right. You just need a good niche and dedication to get one started. Imagine having 100 members at just $10 a month. $1000 a month for almost no effort once you get the users there and staying. Think outside of the box and figure out what people will pay monthly for. Create the most unique content there is for that niche. Make an affilate program for it and you are off to making a living with just a little membership website. Hope this helps!

I have always been told to choose I niche I like and am interested in. That way it will be easier to work in that niche.
