You could try looking into using WordPress for setting up an eCommerce site. Simple enough to use and manage.

What is your technical ability? As mentioned you can go with Magento, but it'll require IT skills. They also have a "Go" service where the hosting and set up is done for you; just add products. But there's a fee to use it too.

The simplest free way would be to setup a WordPress site, install and Setup the Woocommerce plugin and then install something like Wootique. Not much of a learning curve so it shouldn't take you too long.

The other option of course it to use a hosted solution like Payloads, Shopify or Tictail depending on what kind of products you want to sell.

If you are not familiar with development codes or not so tech savvy person then go with WordPress. An unbelievably large number of themes are available for WordPress. WordPress themes are editable and this open source approach allows you to modify them to your heart's content.
Given its widespread appeal, there are a large number of plugins available, usually free of charge, to add new functions to WordPress.

Hi, Please don't use woo-commerce of wordpress. They update their plugins and then a confllict comes in a system. Plus most of them are very expensive. For starters you can go for opencart. Its pretty easy to set up , covers all your requirements and is stable when compared to wordpress solutions. Magento is no doubt the most amazing thing till yet but you need to be a superman to figure it out, its complex and resource hogging. I have also written a post here http://gugiboss.com/tips-to-start-online-store/

I find both Magento and OpenCart as robust and advanced eCommerce solutions. As alok00 mentioned Magento is complex and you really need to be a superman to configure it properly else their is a high change of breaking it. I personally like OpenCart as that is easy to use, light weight and high performing advanced eCommerce solution.

Now days you can even go to ready-to-use cloud based e-commerce solutions, where you need not to configure anything or know any technical stuff. You just signup and get your advanced and customizable eStore ready in few hours.

Just for info, I am running an eCommerce focused technology company, so feel free to reach me if you need any further help in setting up your eStore. I am always available to help businesses and individuals going eCommerce ways !

Good luck for your online venture.

There are a few options such as installing magento on your own domain and hosting (it is a little involved but looks great once finished!) Depending on your experience - wordpress may be a good starting place as you can then add a nice cart (plugin) to a simply site that you have created. Hope this helps !

@mastersim, according to my experience, WordPress is not offering many payment options. We have to integrate always plugins with the WordPress which make difficult to maintain. However, in Magento and OS Commerce, all the payment options are per-installed.

Yes agreed magento is the better option - I was just trying to advise for people trying to setup their first one. In my experience I found magento more difficult to get my head around. But each to their own :)
