You need to do on page optimisation and offpage optimisation.

For onpage optimisation, try basics of onpage seowhich takes you through all the steps and gives sample code where necessary.

For offpage optimisation, get backlinks - from articles such as ezines, social bookmarking such as digg mixx propeller, squidoo, press releases, directories, blog commenting, your own blogs (try wordpress or opera) and forums.

    Good luck.

Learning search engine optimization is a long process. It's not something you're going to do overnight. I would suggest getting a book first so that you learn the basics in some kind of orderly fashion. Then move on to following well respected SEOs online like Aaron Wall, Danny Sullivan, Rand Fishkin, etc. Do this for months before trolling forums like DP IMO. Otherwise, you'll find yourself following a lot of bad advice if you can't distinguish between those who know and those who "think" they know things.

Exactly what "Canonical" said. Well, minus the buying a book. (most books are out-dated) but some can give you some good tips for on-page opt.

also try to google this: Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide
    Googles starter guide to seo.

You can analyze your competitors, their backlinks, content quality, domain age. This will help you in analyzing how long it will take to long in the SERPs. It's always good to have realistic expectation about ranking.
