There are many many online tutorials you can work through, and there are plenty of self help books on the subject.

You shouldnt need to pay if you are just trying to learn the basics, for example;

It's basicly an online book, teaching you from basic stuff to pro stuff.

 

I suggest you buy a good book from your local book store or Amazon.com and practice PHP.
