    One way: you acquire backlinks through article marketing, press release, blog commenting, buying link, more. All links toward your site.

    Two way: you exchange link to webmasters. Your link will be at some else. And other link will be at your site.

    Three way: same as in the two way, but there are 3 sites involved in this way. You own two sites and another webmaster own a site. Or you own one site and another webmaster own two sites. A link to B, B link to C and C link to A.

    By the way, I use link assistant back link tool to manage 3, 4 and more-way link building. It helps you keep track of your network, cause it's hard to do it with Excel spreadsheets.

    Tier way method, safe for seo
    Tier 1:
    B to A

    Tier 2:
    C to B to A (this way B will increase autorithy as well, and A will gain more authority that a normal link)

    Tier 3:
    D to C to B to A (This way C and B increase autorithy, and A will get the most of the link juice)

    Don't do two way link exchanges, google doesn't consider those natural links, so it's bad for link building, and you will get penalized for it.

    make it simple,
    one way link: Link at Site A point to Site B
    two way link: Link at Site A point to Site B and Link at Site B point to site A
    three way link: Link at Site A point to Site B and Link at Site B point to Site C and link at Site C point to Site A

    Do proper linkwheel, use web 2.0 in between, that would be the easiest to set up and has the best impact
