    I have tried even paid backlinks
    But it is not worth it
    Build them up naturally by speaking to publishers, prowl around in DP and other such forums you will find plenty of publishers ready to do link exchange

    No work = no glory.

    Keep submitting to web directories, write and submit articles, submit bookmarks, add your url to forum signatures, exchange links with like sites, etc., etc.

    there is no such thing called free lunch. if some site has the capability to send traffic to some other site, they will either use the traffic themselves or sell it. not giving away free. if you want quality, pay for it and you will be better off

    You won get that much traffic from them (directories), their main target is to improve your SERP and your organic traffic should rise indirectly.
