Minimalism is the key. Keep clutter away so that the message of the graphic will be loud and clear.

I like the blue as well - it is a very fresh colour. The first design did have a cluttered feel to it, yet the second one, just many more text links, looks too much like a directory.

I would suggest not losing all of the icons, as they work well for navigation.

Too crowded you need more white space. Less is more.

You could try for a premade template and maybe have some flash elements to it to draw some attention

 

You can try Adobe brushes for that....

 

the best way to design it is like an upside down pyramid... put your "heaviest" things at the top....

and get rid of all the penguins.
