I like using social networking sites to promote my sites. Yeah paid for traffic is the best way to go, but using social networking sites can be of major help. Oh and social bookmarking sites help out too.

Just posting your site on forums like this will help you get some traffic - your above post even gave you a link on google. The best way to promote a social networking site is to use MONEY and then if it's good you can hope it goes viral. There's no other way my friend, everyone nowadays is over at facebook and similar.

Big Business use the pay per click option on popular search engines because their revenue is large enough that a few pennies per click for a million click is justifiable. I think the site is ok if it functions properly; basically FB and Twitter has made the social site business very difficult and Google+ has added the difficulty another dimension.
