    It depends upon your interest.
You can select any niche that interests you.
Just for the sake of high earning potential, you can't make the niche.
Build a website and develop an authority status.

Start something does not exists if you going to start a city directory kind of business. If your intension is to make money, then start a blog and write about something that interests you. You can make money by referring to affliate programs, etc.

I have discussed some of this on my blog posted in the signature.

Shouldnt one first learn how to make money before teaching others how to make money?

One way to monetize it is with Adsense. People in your city buy AdWords ads about what they offer. You put the Adsense code on your site (indicate in your Adsense account that you want local ads only) and whenever someone clicks one of the ads, you make a few pennies. It's not much per click, but with a successful site, you can live off what you earn. It does take time though. Some marketers do quite well with Adsense while others avoid it like the plague because it isn't profitable enough.

Another option is to sell ad space on your site to other site owners in your city. I have no idea how much you'd charge, but you could start at a small fee in the beginning until your site becomes popular. The more popular and successful it is, the more you can charge for advertising.

Also, look for products related to your city that have affiliate programs. Sign up and put their links on your site. Do reviews of those products to help Pre-Sell them before your visitors get to the sales page. If they don't have affiliate programs, approach them anyway and recommend that they start one as you would be very keen to promote it for them. Many will jump at the chance to get someone promoting their products for them, for free - in exchange for a commission. It's all good for them.

That's how you can make money with a city-based web site.

It sounds like a massive project though. You might want to break it down into something more specific, like one particular feature of your city. For example, if it has a great art culture, build your site around that rather than around the city as a whole. If you chose art, you might speak to the local arts center about putting their ads on your site.

Also, you'll want to make sure someone else doesnt already offer a city site. Many cities do have such sites already, either done by the cities themselves or by their tourism boards. You don't want to be competing with companies that have the resources to build massive sites like yours might require.

    Hope this helps.

Good point but one can teach others as they learn as well. This is what many do online I've figured. They get an idea and they dig into it. While they dig into it, they share it with others - build a fan club along the way...

That might work, but even so, they haven't really seen whether those ideas actually work. They'll be taking what others have told them, rather than basing their advice on first-hand experience. Now, if they ARE getting some success, that could be good or bad. It might be a transient thing, non-sustaining - just a stroke of luck. To advise others on how to make money, I think the teacher must have sufficient experience to prove that they know what they're doing and that they can do it repeatedly with equal or better results.

    Here's an example.

Over the years, I've read tons of instructional material on how to make money on line and have seen some minimal success. I can rattle off that information right out of my head, but I'd be reluctant to try to build a business around that knowledge because I just haven't seen the proof. It works for others (or so they say), but that is not MY proof. It's theirs.

You are right and you've explained it well.

What I said above won't work for every case but it will work for some. For example, online based - lots of people pass on information without even trying to understand it for themselves. Affiliate programs, etc, people review them, people talk about them and refer people to buy it, but they don't know anything about it.

Well established people, will however, review the product and test it before they talk about it because their credibility is at stake.

So yes you do make a good point. For some credibility matters and for beginners, they are just building it.

Very great ideas in theory. However, if you search many of the forums Adwords is a controversial topic of conversation these days. Many accounts are being banned or ads being frozen as it seems google has lost interest in the affiliate industry, seeing us as bottom feeders.

PPC campaigns combined with marketing tools like SEO, blogs, and forums is the best route to take, so you don't put all your eggs in one basket.
