I want to change my Wordpress permalinks - but I've already started.

Hi, I wonder whether someone can help me?

I started both of my blogs more than a month ago. Both are self hosted on Windows, one is using WP 2.3.1 and the other is WP 2.2.1.

I am clearly a bit slow, but I only realised that I could change my permalinks to something a bit more meaningful than the default today. But doing so obviously breaks all the links on my site.

I have tried the main plug ins - both Dean Lee's and Scott Yang's and neither of them work for me. They either result in the default IIS 404 error page (if I change the permalink so it doesn't have index.php in it), the custom 404 error page (if I choose a permalink which does have the index.php in it) or a compilation failed error (Warning: Compilation failed: nothing to repeat at offset 1 in \\nas39ent\domains\t\thetigerempire.co.uk\user\htdocs\wp-includes\classes.php on line 99)

I don't know what to do? Are there any other ways to change it? Or am I doing something wrong with the plugins? I even tried a straight redirection plugin and that didn't work either (it gave me the default IIS 404 error page). Is it something to do with Windows?

Any help would be really appreciated.

    clearly is something with windows.

dunno how to windows handle it, but the plug in need the apache mod rewrite and the htaccess file (apache and linux)

if you are getting the 404 iis default error is because it's not redirecting the old permalink structure. change your permalinks anyways and make sure 404 is handled by wordpress instead of the iis.... at least it will rank your 404 :D

My blog is 8 months old and I was going to do permalink on WP 1 month ago but I gave up. I just left the numbers such as p=232; p=321 in the pages. Don't want to risk anything even if I do the redirection.

If I were you, I would give Deans Permalinks Migration plugin the once over.

It takes care of the 301 redirects for you so that once you change your permalink structure, incoming requests for the old URL automatically redirected to the new one, plus, it tells search engines to update their databases as well.

Works like a champ on all the Wordpress blogs I started before I had a clue about good SEO.
