The best way to make backlink is find Do-follow blogs, write a relevant comment and in your name leave your keyword and do the same for your url. I am on first page for many of my keywords. What i do is not go after the keyword which has strong competition but go for less competitive keyword in which chances are good to be in first page on search. If its a very popular keyword you are trying to get to the top slot you you need deep pockets i am not saying that its not possible but it would be a very hard job,but if its a site that you are using long tail keywords it is much easier and can be achieved much quicker.
