i have thought about buying my own server and hooking it up at my house, and not having to pay a monthy fee for my websites (besides the domain cost) but i dont really have any idea how that works. idk how much servers go for, and how to hook them up, and buy a domain for them. so can someone teach me, or give me a link to a site that can teach me? thank you.

depends on what kind of server you want. they'll cost you anywhere between a couple hundred, to a couple thousand.

also, it's not best to serve up via home connection

Forget about da server. It's your internet connection speed that you want to worry about!!!! Depending on how populer your sites are, and your internet connection speed, it might end up very slow for you to surf the internet, and your visitors trying to not fall to sleep when they try to visit your sites!! You do have a T10000 connection, right!!! :D:D:D:D

in the UK a 2MBit ADSL (that means it can upload and download both ways at the same time at 2MBit speed) by BT will set you back £300 a month, thats about $600 a month, you can get 6 fully managed servers for that price if you look around.

if you want a quality server from someone you can trust to deliver what they promise then look no where else but here on DP and pm a guy called Mia

    he will sort you out
and to see what i ordered and i am so pleased i did then just look at his site here http://hostinglizard.com/
you'll be please with the server and service as i was.

you can quote me on that

having server's in your home isnt a good idea, you will need a dedicated DSL line and for that price you can buy multipule servers from a datacentre and they would come fully managed with a 100mbit dedicated line.

if maybe your using it for exchange hosting you could just purchase a cheap pc and buy a static ip off your isp

    Hi,

My expertise is server administration linux. In fact when I first started with my very own servers I was running them out of the ouse poweredge servers os linux redhat. I can give you some help. It's nice having your own server right in the house. If it ever goesn down you can push a button and your back up. I had the racks the works.. Dell makes great servers but no need spending a ton if you don't need to . You can build your own server.

If you live in AMERICA I can talk to you over the phone and help you. It's very simple to someone thats been doing it for years but a pain to a newbie. Security is the main focus once the server is setup.

Do you have a price that you can afford to purchase a server at ? You can also get great deals on dell power edge servers on ebay.com I also have a ton of equipment here that I can work with you on. Like cat 5 cables, routers, serious stuff you will need.

You can just have a PC and run WAMP on it but youl need to keep the pc on 24 hours and have a very fast bandwidth and internt speed. Did it once wasnt really worth it. You can get dedicated servers for $100 min

I had a home server for about a year. But i got sick of when i was on vaction or not home the power went off and my server was down and i didn't know it.
So i bought hosting no its on 24/7.
If you dont have much traffic a home server is fine

So buying and running hiw own server will end up costing him way more than he now pays for his website hosting and domain cost?
