Use original, quality articles on YOUR site, and then submit re-written articles that are significantly different to article directories (that way if google does ever penalize for duplicate content, your site will be safe).
Yeah, I would never post the same article from my site to the directories. I'm just still a little confused about submitting the same articles to just the article sites though. I'm afraid it will be a waste of time. :[
Duplicate on your own site is a problem. If its from articles not hosted on your domain not at this point. Always submit to ezinearticles first. Then consider buying a few credits on isnare well worth it and should not be overlooked. The only complaint is waiting for the articles to get approved but well worth the wait. The credits you buy are distribution credits so 10 bucks gets you 5 credits or 5 articles. Though I get better backlinks in the short term form ezine I get about twice as much traffic from an isnare submission in the long term. You just have to figure out if it is worth it and it depends onhow well you write articles that get views or clicked on. For a reference a typical article I submit gets about 200-550 views first day and some are doing much better than that. I do a lot of keyword research and research other articles before writting my own. If I see articles in similar niche not doing well as a whole I don't bother unless i am trying to get back links and my site. You can always spin off rewritten articles with different keywords and titles in about 15 minutes but that is me I'm a little slow. It used to take me much longer but after a hundred articles or so .... Some can do it in 10 minutes or less. I know there is software that will do this but I like having a little more control. Good luck.

Does anyone here use the Article Post Robot? I have used it and it seems pretty decent for submitting to a lot of directories all at the same time. Any feedback one way or the other?
Write three versions of your article using the same paragraph structure, then randomly pick a paragraph from each version. This will create a unique enough article. Here is a free tool that does exactly that: http://www.thekaizenbusiness.com/hermes/ Also build out your own list of real publishers and topical sites... This is where you are going to find a good amount of people who have an interest in your topic. Here is an article on how to do that: http://www.thekaizenbusiness.com/?p=177
I haven't heard anyone explain how duplicate content is supposed to work. If google detects it, the index page(s) will get sent to the "supplemental index". You know, when you do a google search and get the message "some results have ommitted, et al...". It's 'supposed' to work for your site and other sites (but many times doesn't). For instance, if I write an article on my site, and then submit to 3 article directories MY original article should be in google's main index, and the other 3 (duplicate ones) should be sent to the supplemental index. No biggie, although supplemental backlinks don't count as much as main index ones. I have tested this with articles I've written, and usually my original article ranks highest, and then maybe one of the article directories will show up, and then the other 2 will get sent to the "supplemental index". Goog's algorithm isn't perfect and seems to work pretty sporadically.
