I told my husband I could sell my site for 6-figures- was I right?

By 6 figures I thought you mean a million dollars. I usually here that term meaning up to million but I guess I was wrong.

Then you are using it incorrectly, 6 figures is
    123 456
    100,000

6 zero's on the other hand is
    1,000,000

Well 6 figures does go up to $999,999 so that's basically right. Although most people wouldn't use "6 figures" to mean a million.

I can remember many years ago trying to sell one of my sites I had spent years building up. It was a great site with tons of traffic and content, but barely any revenue. This was before the days of adsense. I wanted 50k for it, mostly for my time and efforts building it up. The best I could get was an offer for 15k.

In the end I decided to pass on the offer... Soon after adsense arrived and saved my broke $$@.

Point is, we always value our own site to include our blood, sweat and tears. But no one else really cares about that.

So my advice.... Hang on to it and keep growing it. Sounds like you've been doing fairly well.... But there is always room for improvement. For instance, the fact that you get so little search traffic is great for stability, but that is also a huge opportunity for growth. With a little SEO makeover perhaps you could double or triple your traffic and revenues. Then you might be getting in the mid-XX,XXX range.

    Good luck!

    i totally disagree
a site is worth by it's content, unique users, registered users and other factors and not it's revenue ( for content websites at least )

If it's based on revenue, the owner will probably have to add in the disclaimer "Past earnings does not guarantee future earnings."
Then it becomes kind of useless to price a site based on previous earnings isn't it? Unless, of course, there's some way to prove that the earnings can be stable in future. I, for one, does not believe that earnings based on search engines ranking can be stable.

Yup, I wrote 98% of the content.

Currently trying to figure out how to funnel December dollars my way, considering that I have over 30K parents as subscribers.

No one pays 24 months for most sites you see HERE. However many many sites sell for 24 or 36 months revenue that you personally don't know about.

To the OP, no not $100,000.

Original content is King! IMHO your site would be worth more than the 12 X monthly revenue (keep that appraisal for crappy proxies, common arcades and the too many myspace sites, yeah we all have owned these sites:rolleyes: )

If you gross profit is around the $1K per month as you said, value can be anywhere from $15K - $20K perhaps more. Nice wholesome site, good topic and decent name. Ok that's just my appraisal, and everyone and their mothers (no pun intended) will have one. Don't believe the lowballer appraisals some may just not like the topic, the look or some will just want you to think it's value is low to try and take it off your hands.;)
    Again IMHO.

    how for mysite lol
    www.hackmygame.com
its been online for 1 year now
Full access memberships were $14.99, and are ending right now, so people have to renew, so we dropped the price to $7.99.
We get an average of 1200unq. a day, 32k unq. last month.

Site makes around 600-800 a month.
(should double since 1 year memberships are ending)

    29k members
100 members a day signing up
1 or 2 "Full access" memberships purchased a day
    Fully automated...

    :)
I was looking to get 6k for it, guess i should go higher?

the low XX,XXX range. like everyone is saying 10x monthly revenue, unless it is picked up by a larger company and is very unique

I think the 10-12 month rule is the closest thing to an average we've got. If the site is old, has very high PR, or a valuable identity these factors could theoretically increase beyond 24 months. A popular site can be worth a *lot* to a competitor who is trying to take that market when you already have a foothold, for example.

Extenuating circumstances aside though, value is directly proportionate to earnings and is inflated by age. Unless a buyer has a solid plan to monetize your site, you need to maximize and maintain earnings to directly increase the value.

Increase your earnings as much as possible to increase the overall vaue. If the day ever comes, take your time with the sale and identify a buyer who will find maximum value in the site to obtain top dollar.

    hi ellen

you say you have 30k members. Have you tried emailing all these members requesting a donation ? Ask them kindly that a simple $1 donation will enable you to double your efforts to increase the content and provide a better service. To encourage them to give, why not say 20% of that donation will be given to a charity that is closely related to your website topic. $1 to your loyal users means nothing but even if 30% of those 30k donate.... that's a sizeable amount for yourself.. also using this money you can invest more in your website which will in turn increase the net worth of your site.

You can even run a competition for the best contributed article from your members, asking members to contribute an article on a particular subject, together with a $1 donation..... then award 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes from the money collected.

    good luck.

See because of how the internet changes all of the time and trends, I would probably only strech to 6-8 months. Alot of things change over 10-12 months
