If there was a track record of the mailing list bringing in good profits, that would also substantially increase the sale price. An interested buyer would be wanting to see documentation on the earnings.

    zzzzzzzzzzing! - lol

Or even a track record that newsletter with a commercial element were sent out regularly. I have bought sites before with big email lists (all opt in) but come to realize that they were never used. When I sent out a newsletter I got a ton of opt outs because they either don't remember signing up in the first place or aren't interested anymore.

    Another good point Peter!

I think the best advice on here is from GeorgeB.

    I hate this:
Maybe you've made a great site, loads of good content, but you are rubbish at placing ads on your site to get a high CTR. -- some people will put ads in a lot more obstructive places then others - so a higher CTR.

Maybe this is the standard way of selling sites, but i dont like it. It can make all the work you put into somthing seem worthless.

Best thing to do is, get some advice on better placing ads. Your ads at the bottom are basicly worthless there, and your eyes just go over the ones at the top.

You have a lot of content, and your gettings some visitors? 1k a day?

I would take more advice from the other sections and start marketing it better and improve ad locations.

Sorry if this is nothing to do with if i think its worth $1m :( just thought i'd say it anyway :)

    Cheers.

Well, yes, just because you work hard on something doesn't make it valuable. There's no god of fairness overseeing this industry to make sure everyone gets a reasonable price for his toils. In some cases I have paid far more than the standard 12x monthly earnings, because the former owner of the site had not focused on earnings, and I know the site can make better than that. It's entirely possible that this would happen in this site when/if it was sold too, but it might make the difference between a sale at $15K and $30K, perhaps, but I can't imagine someone paying $100K for it. People just don't pay MySpace type multiples for small to mid size websites.

Yes, very true. A stale mailing list can easily have 50%+ of the emails bounce when you first try it out. I've been there. A mailing list that sits unused does go stale very quickly. I didn't really understand whether or not she implied the list is actively being used or not. It could make a big difference.

Some moron on eBay wanted £1000 for a turn key site you could buy elsewhere for £200, just because "I invested £1000 in AdWords and want that back..."

It's all a combination of actual value, based on solid, persistent proof plus perceived value in the eyes of a potential buyer. Maybe someone will pay $100K for it just because it so happens to be their dream venture...

You can only tell once you actually sell it. On top of that, you need to know how, where, when and to whom to sell it. It aint simple...

As the site seems quite new and hasn't been promoted much, the revenue could be affected heavily by search engine changes. Also it needs the right person to take care of.

    I evaluate it as 5K, 10K maximum.

I just noticed all these responses, thanks, DP'ers!

So far the site is not for sale, thankfully. So this was an educational curiousity thread.

The mailing list is used, I have an autoresponder go out every 5/6 days with an informative article- I get lots of comments after the mailings.

The adsense is much closer to XXXX than 100.00.

I do need to learn to milk my mailing list better- any suggestions for resources other than Jimmy's L&T would be appreciated!

Also, 93% of my traffic is totally viral... based on the movie, less than 3% is SE- although I have done some optimization and placed keyword rich links around the net. Today I'm #1 on msn for "parenting advice" but that keeps changing.

    Thanks again.

Wait outside their house for the Google cheque to arrive...

    Or just ask them.

If it's a company, you can normally buy their filings.

well its all talk until someone puts up money =P

you can say its worth 10000000000000000000000000000$

but what someone would actually pay.... I have seen people throw up some serious figures and I know none of them would ever pay that much for the site.

So what is the real answer to what a site is worth?

    Only what someone will pay

... and that is the bottom line. The only real way to measure is to put it up for sale and let the market decide.

Yep, I had that one in my pocket all through page one and then you two hit it.

It had me thinking, anyone that has ever sent 9K emails, knows this can be quite the task to execute, let alone manage the list. This means alot of work, or a great software package. (For me anyway.)

Since the point of email lists being possibly stale came up, how is this list managed? If this is an active list that is managed well, you can get more value it seems.

    Good luck

EDIT: I see most of the answers, musta missed um. What software manages your list? If you'd share that info, I'm curious.

    Yeah, go to ebay....
Sites have a buy it now value of up to 75million!
Or an asking price of that much.
Never saw one sell yet, but even now, today, you can see some websites listed with a wanted price of 25 million.

Yeah if that's the way you wanna look at it.

Use PPC to generate a 9K mailing list. It would costya $450 in the list alone assuming every 5 cent click converted. Not to mention the time to generate it and the value of the rest of the site.
