I think this is just plain wrong

Sucks...but the original owner really doesnt have anything to stand on. I had a domain i let expire on accident sell for $x,xxx, but oh well, that's life for ya

 

Pretty crude comment, IMO. Seems like you want to jeer at the guy while he's down.

 

In the comments, read the posts by sirmalloc, who's the one who renewed diggnation.com. The diggnation domain is still owned by the digg owners. The expired domain was still in the redemption period, so all sirmalloc did was make a payment on behalf of the digg owners.

 

Whatever happens, the new owner should at least forward the name servers to the guys hosting, so it doesn't affect his business too much while they get this sorted. Although he has no obligation, that, at least, would be an honourable thing to do.

I don't think the former owner has any rights to get the domain, but because of the domain name, he could prevent use of it for anything related to its former use. The US has "common law" trademarks which means he doesn't have to register it to hold rights to the use of the name. Probably in the best interest of both parties to get together and work something out.

 

Bdmunee, stop trying to sell the domain to other people and work it out with the old owner.

 

I contacted the seller and got no reply. After reading some of the dialogue, this seems to have become a firestorm. If both follow up on their threats, it will probably turn out to be a lose-lose situation.

After reading this I had to login to my 4 registrars and check over 200 domains to make sure all the important ones are on autorenew

Hopefully now I won't have nightmares tonight about losing one!

Actually more appropraite would be, if someone throws something away in the public trash bin, and someone else picks it up, should the person who threw it away be clamoring for it back? Irregardless how it got to the trash, it was still discarded by the original owner or handled in a way that allowed it to be discarded.

 

I will donate to the Shoemoney domain registration fund.

I actually withdraw my support for both of these guys. I was defending bdmundee and he turns round and takes a poke at me (and then SarahK who is nothing but nice). Brady continues to trash the new owner.

Neither of these guys have any class whatsoever and they seem to deserve each other. Hopefully, this now just goes away

 

Agreed. I've been watching this situation closely.. because hey, we all own domains right?

I did have a little sympathy for Brady, simply because domains can be tricky sometimes and we don't know the whole story behind the people who actually had control over it.

At the same time.. I thought it was unfair for everyone to rag on the new owner.. but he too has shown what a "class act" he is . The entire situation with domain names is a mess and rather irratating. It would be nice if ICANN could just make the rules and regulations easy and simple to follow...
