I think this is a good question

    Hi

I was looking into my main competitor and it appears that the vast majority of their back links use the exact same title and description (around 3000 links).

I know that G likes natural link building and that is what I always do, but if G really sees the same title and description as bad, why has the site in question been number one for so long?

Also another example, if someone knows nothing about SEO (and isn't intentially trying to gain back links) However they do regularly participate in one forum like DP for example where they have their sig in place. All the back links then would not only have the exact same title, but would come from one source only, would they really be penalised?,

I know that potentially your competitors could be doing this, so it's hard to penalise, but if you can get away with using your main keyword as anchor text all the time and get away with it, why doesn't everyone do it, especially when you only have one main keyword.

I thought it was a good question, you may not :D

I think Google accepts a certain amount of links using a certain anchor text before penalizing their rankings for that keyword. It may depend on where those links are coming from as well. They may allow a higher percentage if you have built up a lot of trust through things like aged domain, aged links, well trusted links, etc.

There usually is no problem with getting a bunch of links all using the same anchor text, but ideally it should be balanced out with other related anchor text. So you could use a different anchor text in some articles or as signatures on other forums. Try to vary your anchor text up as much as possible between several target phrases.

Hi thanks for that. That is what I do and will always continue to do, but what I was wondering is don't people just hammer their chosen keyword because they think that G won't penalise them because it could be their competitors.

With the cheap submission services available it would be easy for someone to pay someone to submit their competitors sites to thousands of sites using the same anchor text, hense why people are always saying G doesn't punish sites because they don't now who submitted the link.

It's hard to know what the truth is with so many different opinion ;)
