I think my Power Supply is shot, but the lights on the MB still light up

    Hello all,

I was just wondering if anyone could offer some insight to a problem I have. My computer died the other day and won't turn on. I wasn't around when the computer died but I could smell burning coming from my PSU.

However, the lights on my motherboard still light up. I guess what I want to know is, can the lights on the MB still light up even with a dead PSU?

    Thanks in advance

This happened to me 3 months ago with my power supply died. Mother board's Light was working even though Power Supply was dead. I opened the whole CPU thinking that It could be RAM (because of a beep) but it turned out to be power supply.

Get your PSU changed and it will work fine.

yeah i build computers and this definately sounds like the power supply to me mate. swap it over and it should start working again. failing that, your motherboard could be on its way out

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Come to think of it, I think I just pushed the limit on the PSU. It's only 450w and I have dual graphics cards, dual processors, multiple drives and stuff.

I swap out the psu tomorrow and post up my results and hopefully this thread will be useful to someone else someday.

if you have a spare PSU or another computer, try to swap the PSU and see if it's works or not. for sure just carry it to the comp shop and let the experts check. (hope you will not find the shop like me that I even think i know about the comp stuffs more than the comp shop staff...)
