I was using HostMonster for domains and hosting but I decided to go with DreamHost for hosting. Anyway I still have some domains with HostMonster so I guess I need to transfer the ones I want to DreamHost, correct? Btw, I only really want 1 or 2 for my DreamHost account.
I prefer and reccomend keeping you domain names seperate from your hosting account. Godaddy is having a one year renewal at $6.99 for all transfers this month. Maybe you want to open a free account and move them there.
Yeah, many folks offer free or reduced domain names the first year, then jack the prices up after that. If you use namecheap.com or some other general service like that, you know up front what it will cost u this year, next year, and 5 years down the road. For example, a hosting company offers a free domain for you when u sign up. Then the next year will cost your $19, and cost u that for every year after that. If you only want that domain for a year, its a bargain. If you wanted it longer, you lost your butt... You need to do your research and remember that nothing is free, and when there is a discount, make sure you know what happens after that... Zeek
Domains are domains. And web hosting is web hosting. Do not mix them. With domain name transfer you will need to pay renewal fee. And domain name transfer allowed once per 60 days.
No, I wouldn't think you need to. But what you might need to do is if you moved your web site, you will have to go into your DOMAIN account, and point the Name Servers to your new name servers on dream host. As siberforum mentioned, there is a difference between a domain name and web host. Go into your Domain account and look for something like DNS, Domain Name Server, or Transfer DNS. The key word you are looking for is Name Server. When you find it, it will probably say something like ns1.hostmonster.com and ns2.hostmonster.com. Again, I don't know anything bout hostmonster and am just guessing. So all you need to do is find out what the nameservers are for dreamhost, They might be ns5.dreamhost.com and ns6.dreamhost.com. So now all you need to do is change the hostmonster entries on hostmonster, to dreamhost. Hope this makes sense cuz I'm having a hell of a time trying to splain this stuff) As you can see, all you need to do is tell your domain name where your websites are located. BTW, this shouldn't cost you anything unless hostmonster gave you this domain name for free. Zeek
