I think I finally have a really good idea for the next "big" or at least known website. It will be a type of search engine we'll say. I cant really go into too many details. I figured I'd use an API to start, so the code, website, logo, legal fees, marketing, etc would be around $50,000 - $100,000. I currently dont have a job, as I'm a full time student at a University and would really not want to take out a loan for that much. (I cant be graduating $200,000 in debt). So I ask you, how did you raise cash to start your wesite? Is there a way I can patent or trademark my idea so if it takes a while to raise capital, others cant steal my idea? Once patented or trademark, would I then be able to sell the idea (securely, dont want someone running off with the idea)? Any other pointers, tips, etc? Thanks.
Everything you need to research and apply for a trademark is at the USPTO website. A section for beginners, available from the home page, offers a simplified introduction to USPTO services (click the “Need Help?†tab). Or go right to the section on Trademarks for basic facts, fees and pricing, and tips on conducting a search via the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS).
