I think I have a profitable keyword/niche/topic?

I think I have an idea which may be profitable, I know quite a fair bit about the topic too,
But I'm wondering how can I check how profitable/competetive this particular keyword or topic would be, I've never used Adsense before and am a complete beginner to IM etc.

I checked using Google Keyword Tool and these are the results I got:
MyKeyWord - 165,000 Global Monthly Searches, 22,000 Local Monthly Searches
It's 'competition bar' is half full.
MyKeyWord with the common short form of the word - 673,000 Global Monthly Searches and 27,100 Local Monthly Searches and the competition bar is less than 1/12th full - Am I right in thinking that I would be benefited to use the short form of my keyword due to much higher traffic and much lower competition?
P.S This is 'sort of' a medical topic and usually requires surgery, My keyword surgery comes up with little searches and full competition, A problem for me? I dont think so?

I am from the UK btw.

Would I be better off setting up a website with set content or a website which updates content via articles, although this is sort of a medical topic, so 'updates' so to say would be scarce, although I could use my imagination?

Why don't you try? After all that "researching" why stop here and ask?

Thats what I was thinking but I'd rather not make the beginner mistake on rushing in getting hosting and a domain and doing alot of hard work on a topic/keyword which won't make much cash?

Also I wanted to ask should I use the Short form/Slang of my keyword because it has 6 times the amount of searches and 10% of the competition?

Just go for it,setting up a site these days the costs are very low,i would say use the proper keyword in the main domain and the add the slang or short version in your keywords.

I know its hard to judge the keyword without knowing it but I wouldn't wanna risk it specially with the amount of coverage this forum gets..
So I should just go ahead and get the domain/hosting..
Is .com the only good thing? Because I may be able to get a better domain name with .info or something.

I don't blame you for not telling the niche/keyword.
I would say buy the .com they are the best. However, if your going to go all out with the site you might want to consider buying all of the popular TLD's.
I would also recommend getting a reseller hosting account too if this is going to be your first hosting account. That way you can host as many sites as you want and won't have to transfer later if you upgrade so you can build more sites.

Sounds like you have a good opportunity. Another good way to find out how much competition there a keyword has is to do and exact search in google with quotes and see how many relevant hits come up vs a normal search without quotes.

I agree with many of the other posts here. You never know unless you try. That's the name of the game. Good Luck!

The beginner's mistake is not to already have hosting ready to host multiple domains. You don't risk much trying it out. But I would rather make a broader niche(s) site instead of a small one very targeted, but that's just me and others might think differently on this issue.

Its not a exactly a highly targeted niche but its not a broad spetrum either, fairly small topic though...
What I think is that although there may be a few sites with information for it, I doubt the people will have optimised their sites for this purpose and thus maybe I could get a good ranking.. - Well thats what I THINK!

Hi, I'd say just go for it. Ensure you get some good content on your site and check out other posts regarding building backlinks, generating traffic and so on. Look at your competitors sites as well to see what keywords they're using and where their backlinks are coming from.

Main thing is though, whilst research is great, you really need to take action as you won't make a penny until you're up and running.

Have you considered distributing a Press Release or other SEO strategies to kick start your link building activity?

Just out of interest, how are you considering monetizing your site? Solely through Google ads or do you have other income streams set up?

I know I just need to take the jump and do it but it seems looking for trouble to go in all guns blazing with no ammo, If you understand me?
The only method of income I have considered is Adsense but I'm not looking to make huge bucks, I'd be pleased with a mere $10/day which I understand is challenging yet achievable..

Well, $10 a day and you'll have your set up costs covered on day one! Hosting and a domain shouldn't cost more than that.

The main thing is, get it up and running now and then fine tune it as you're going along. You never know, you might start making some money sooner than you think. And stick with it if you don't see immediate results. Sometimes it takes a lot of what might seem like pointless work before you see a return. That's the mistake I made when I started out in IM - I didn't stick with sites long enough before I had another "great idea" and switched to that. I saw a great analogy the other day which was along the lines of online business being like a horse race. You have to stay on the horse to eventually win the race. You don't jump from one horse to another partway through...or something like that..... anyway, it made a lot of sense when I read it first time around...LOL

Haha, sounds good - Thanks for the advice.
The only thing is, I don't know much about websites/backlinks/website promotion etc,
Like I said I'm just a COMPLETE beginner with an idea..
I love doing things myself but i'm lost on this one,
    Any pointers?
