One of my colleague thinks that if you place a date and a time in the title tag (PHP include, gets the current time and date from the server) - the search engine spider will come to the site more often.

I think this is nonsense! Any thoughts?

I am no expert, but all that seems to do is waste perfectly good keyword space. :(

I've never heard that either. Ask for some sources and see if he delivers where he came up with the tip.

Adding dates and times will not help improve rankings.

I also read somewhere that changing the document title, will be a very bad idea for your rankings...
yes, it will come more offen because you change the content, but changing the title... will be very bad

    softgroups,

Changing your title tags will not hurt your rankings with Google. The google bot will come check your site and see the changes. I've done that with some of my title tags in the past. They are fine :)
