Over the last few months the results of a Google search for my most popular keyword on an old site had become less and less relevant. Microsoft had taken over my usual number two rank. By the end of Feb. I was in position 5 and the top 10 results were a strange mixture of unrelated sites. Also in Feb. my site had massive bandwidth use from a Google IP number. I had days where I went from my normal 50 megs to 2.5 gigs; hated to ban a Google IP though A couple of days ago I noticed my main competator and I had both disappeared from google for this term. However, my income has actually increased although my traffic counts look about the same. My competator and I are now #1 & #2 for a much more niche term which according to wordtracker gets about one tenth of the traffic. It looks to me like a #2 ranking for a smaller but more focused niche is as valuable as a #5 or #6 in a less targeted one.
