Thanks Mikey, forgot to mention these:

    time-consuming
    Use unmemorable domain names
    Tough to impossible to stand-out
Ultimately demotivation and site goes down

    That was three :p

Domain names can be memorable if a good one is chosen and branded well. They certainly are time consuming - because they are general. If more specific this would not be an issue as there is less ground to cover.

I think you touched on the aspect of standing out before - uniqueness.

Directories aren't delivering for advertisers, the submitters are happy with a plain old link, but real advertisers won't be.

Yellow Pages is a different case, as you are dealing with a 400 million pound company, previously owned by British Telecom. And the mistake so many make is they see companies like Yell and think it's easy - what they fail to recognise or care about is that the Yells of this world were millionaires before they moved to the web, and that's the whole point. They owned the directory industry to begin with have trust, money and a brand so strong, you will never take em down. All Yell needed to do was slot onto the web, and they were an instant hit - like they were.

Recently though, Yell have lost much in advertising revenue with advertisers not renewing ads.

At the time Yellow Pages was an advertiser's dream, as hardly anything else like it existed - and that's why it worked Unique for it's time.

Eventually Yell.com will sell out to someone like Yahoo, it's gotta be on the cards in the next few years. But you gotta be unique in some way to do well these days.

I also agree with you and mikey, and it will be a bumpy road for most, as for not attracting advertisers, i already have national companies i am working with and many more in the pipe line.

This line of attack is is one of my primary focuses and not some hopeful wishing. but a very tough and hard road to work with.

I'm actually glad that the road is bumpy, it sorts out the men from the boys, a little hard work hurt no-one and will pay in the long run for those who have the resources and will to stick it out.

    Success is never easy.

You have to speculate to accumulate Mike, money comes if you spend enough time working for it. ;)

Enough to make a decent general directory. I'd say the amount of listings in a large directory like dmoz is a good start. Think of the fees to pay editors, article writers.

That's after your structural costs like a catchy and short domain, a decent design, the cost and time involved of finding staff etc.

Mike, if dmoz was a paid directory it would be worth billions and if it took in advertising it would make millions net profit. If you haven't taken into account having to pay for editors, article writers and so on then you shouldn't have started in the first place. People on this lower level tier of directory are greedy, they'd rather have it all and struggle to maintain a decent directory than have a little and pay to get a good one.

My next post is going to be about editors because I don't believe many who claim to review sites for inclusion really do. Hence the absolute need to pay for someone who has to or gets fired.
