They are good because they help categorize your website. I have discovered websites I visit from submitting my own sites to directories. Curiosity, proper categorization, and of course it helps with your overall link building portfolio. It's not the answer for everything, but part of a much larger picture to help get your website some exposure while building links.

    Directories dont have impact.

A few do if they are quality ones, but you could submit to 10,000 of the more rubbish ones and hardly see any effect at all.

They are meant to give you one way links to your site, but in reality most are nofollowed or insist on reciprocal links.

There are other, better legitimate ways to get one way backlinks to your site.

Directory submission is over rated. You need to make sure that you submit to directories that scan their submissions for spam, have a high page rank and do not charge for the submission. Paying for directory submission is buying a link - and google does not like it when people buy links.

They do not know what they are talking about. They hear it from other idiots, and then they pass it on, not really knowing for a fact that has such an "impact."

People love to pass bullshit along, just so they can be heard, or be part of a thread or discussion.

Many say it, just to say it. ... Like seo. The idiots aren't even on page one, yet they say that it works "great." How in the hell do they know, if they aren't even listed high?

Next person who says something like that, ask him to show you how it has helped him. Watch how fast he shuts up.

Submitting to directories is a great way to build links and increase your search engine rankings. In semi-competitive industries it can produce great results. If you add article creation and social media marketing into the link building equation then you can achieve great results for any industry.
