Up to now,i still dont understnad what rss is for and how it works? In what way does it benefit a site and the functions it has.

In addition, how do I send updates on site on newsletters on an asp.net site?Is it using rss?(I see people having it on site and asking users to enter thier email to get the updates)

    Help is much appreciated.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Rss feeds allows you to have auto updating content on your website. You can get the latest headlines and post from other websites on yours. Each rss feeds contains a link that will redirect you the source website. I like to use RSS Content Builder- you can use rss feeds and still keep visitors on your site.

I don't think you can get a feed by e-mail. usually you need a program that takes the feed and convert it to text. Atom works almost the same way. I know some browsers have an option of subscribing to a feed. some sites offer rss feeds for backlinks and traffic, others who subscribe to an rss feed usually have it for informatin rather then going to the site to manually post it on thier site. look at it this way, the Associated Press has information and passes it to small news groups and the small news groups passes / publishes that information. an rss feed does that, only its bots insted of hundreds of humans.

You can try it out at a couple of free services , like ponyfish.com and feedity.com.
Their free RSS feed level is limited in a couple of ways, but it's a good way to give it a try.
Once you create a feed, you can create a widget that shows the feed, using springwidgets.com or widgetbox.com,
and then paste the code for the widget into your site, or another one of your sites.

Is there any merit in running a site solely on the basis of RSS feeds from other blogs ?

Say, if you are willing to build a site on a niche that you are not really comfortable with. Can you just congregate RSS feeds from other websites and display them ?

My argument is that your site will become nothing more than a accumulation of links on a particular topic.

The pages referenced in my signature block below include examples of using RSS Feed subscriptions for automatic page updates and this link presents information relating to generating and using RSS/Atom feeds in general.
