I see alot of sites built in relatively the same way. i.e. header on top,
nav underneath, a couple of side navs, content and a footer. While I
understand the purpose of this (it makes getting around easier for
unsavvy web users) I'm looking for inspiration. Does anyone out there
know of some sites that break from this trend without using alot of
flash? I'm talking about an almost flash free site that is really
original and still easy to navigate.

Agreed, the trend of headers, sidebars e.t.c will never go. More experienced designers use these structures like layout grids and base there design round them using illustration to make it a more unique design.

I personally like to find code snippets on the web like JQuerry navigations, lightboxes e.t.c and intergrate them in the design.

    Some sites for inspiration...
    BrowserShots
Browsershots have a huge database but not all quality.

    Wordpress websites

Good site for finding a site by color

If your building a site you want indexed in Google or other search engines, stay away from flash.
