What are the risk of running a proxy website ?

Some have high traffic and are well paid via adsense, any legal risk of running proxy ?

    Thx

Proxy Hosting is not permitted at a number of web hosts, typically those on the shared hosting environment because the proxy hosting script can be quite CPU and Bandwidth intensive for one.

At the same time, the web host IP address will be logged into the websites your visitors visits and that can lead to some issues especially when your visitors abuse the system and use it to scam, phish and all those nasty things.

I believe that Proxy sites are easy to set up, most just requiring you to get a domain name, the script and a proxy-friendly web host and you are in business. However as to being profitable, it all depends. You most likely need to get a web host which offers loads of bandwidth for peanut prices. At least that's my opinion.

Also Adsense may not show ads for proxized pages. You know that Adsense is strict at the type of contents you can host their ads in so if your visitors uses your proxy to visit porn sites, gambling sites and all those things which is illegal at adsense, you may face the heat.

Proxy sites come and go and when they get blocked, their usefulness fades and new one comes out to fill the space.

Depending on the contents surfed, you may receive notification from law enforcement in aiding their investigation. It can be an issue because proxy sites do not require members to sign up and you most probably will not have any details of who visited those sites, it would appear your server is the culprit.

The Proxy technology is not illegal, it may just aid in committing a crime but then again, in the end, it is in that grey region.

I think that you do have to keep a full log of the original ips and the addresses that they surfed. All you have to do is actively ban people that are just using it to look at illegal stuff. The real money is in people using it to look at myspace and arcades anyway.

Or, you can just host the site on a server in the Ukraine and hide your whois information. Not really worth it though.

As of now, there is nothing illegal in proxies. Main problem is proxy sites/ips get blocked after few days/months from the places(offices/universities) they are used. So the hits decrease drastically.
Also, you should keep a copy of your log file on a monthly basis.
